Needed iPhone 3.0 hacks and tweaks
Now that the iPhone 3.0 firmware has been out for a few days and the jailbreak got available, I finally got around to update my iPhone 3G (no 3GS out here yet) a few days ago. In short it feels like what 1.0 should have been and I think I can use this without going mad on an every day basis. The main thing for me is that they've finally implemented copy and paste. Feels a bit odd to be all worked up about something every other phone I've ever had has had though. Anyway, 3.0 overall is pretty nice, but some tweaks and hacks are required...

17th May, 2009
The Norwegian national day, or constitution day, was a two day affair, just like last year. On Friday the 15th we celebrated it in the office, being a Norwegian company and all, with lots of hotdogs, salmon, and Norwegian beer. The only Norwegian beer we've found so far in Tokyo is Aass, but that's ok. On the actual day, 17th May, there was the traditional party at the embassy. Seems like Norway can't afford to throw 17th May parties for us living in Tokyo anymore as we had to pay ourselves this year. :/ The embassy thing ends quite early as 17th May is traditionally a kids' thing, so a bunch of us went out on town afterwards. Not that much more to tell really.

Chikako & Anthony’s Yakatabune Party
Anthony is heading back to the States after 8 years here and Chikako will follow in a couple of months, so a farewell party was called for. The party took place on a yakatabune (those Japanese party boats you can rent), departing from Hamatsucho and cruising around the Odaiba / Tokyo Bay area. To top it off they made the party a costume party, which explains why the boat is filled with strangely dressed people on the pictures below. A particular cool thing about this party was that I got to meet a lot of friends from Waseda Univ that I haven't seen since I studied there nearly 10 years ago. All the best of luck to Chikako and Anthony over there!

Classic Garden x Mooo~Party x Salmon Sound + The Mammals
Mooo~Party and Salmon Sound joined the Classic Garden event at Club 251 in Shimokitazawa so went there with some friends after a hanami. Shimokita is an interesting area, even if it is a bit young. Unfortunately the redevelopment plans in the works will totally ruin the charm of this neighborhood. :/ Remember seeing some protest campaigns being carried out a week ago in Harajuku. Anyway, I was kind of tired, but it was fun anyway. The live gig by The Mammals was good, crowd was happy, and most of the faces were familiar due to all the Mooo~Parties over the last half year.

Soubetsukai and Karaoke
Tomasz, who has been here on the Bridge Program (sort of exchange program between offices in the company), is sadly going back to the Polish office. Additionally it's Easter... At least in the parts of the world where people celebrate such things, Japan not being one of them. In other words, we needed a farewell party, preferably with an Easter twist. The latter is harder to do than it sounds as there are no Easter decorations nor food available in Tokyo. Strange really as they've adopted Christmas. :/ The closest we got were bunny ears and costumes, and some eggs for the egg hunt. Can really never go wrong with bunnies though, so it turned out ok. Afterwards we spent the entire night at Aya-Ume, the umeshu, oden, and karaoke bar of choice recently. Was good, and reminds me that I should have blogged about that particular bar in more detail... some other time maybe.

Hanami 2009 wrap up
From what I can remember, I didn't get around to do much hanami (Japanese tradition of sitting around under the cherry trees during the sakura blossom eating food and getting drunk) last year so had to make sure that this year was a bit better. Went for three hanamis, plus tried to eat lunch as much outside as possible as our office is next to Meguro river which is famous for the sakuras... This is all nice and all, but the damn flowers keep falling down like snow - Oooh so pretty - into your bento (Japanese lunch box). Hanami is a big thing and people go totally crazy for hanamis. Yoyogi Park for example got as crowded as Shibuya during rush hours. So crowded in fact that you couldn't use your cellphones as all the cells were too congested. Makes it really hard to find your friends in the huge crowded park! Hm.. In retrospect I should have taken some pictures with a proper camera rather than point'n'clicking my compact, but you get the idea even from these crap photos.

Checking out our future office
Our Tokyo office has been overly crowded for quite some time now so we need to move. We finally decided on a nice place in Meguro, which being on the all-mighty Yamanote Line and close to Ebisu and Shibuya is convenient. It's right by the same river we're next to in our current Ikejiriohashi office, so we will still have the best view of the sakuras possible. Went there to check out it out and it looks good. We're on the top floors so the view is nice too. In Japan office spaces are just that, space. You have to build the entire layout with walls and everything yourself (means you hire one of those office design companies), so the actual move is still not going to happen for awhile... but we're big step on the way now. :)

Salmon Sound 3
Some friends of mine - including the some of the Mooo guys - are organizing the one and only annual Norwegian music club event here in Tokyo with the catchy name; Salmon Sound. This year was the 3rd in the series (if we exclude things like the smaller 2.5 event) and took place in Club Wire in Shinjuku as usual. After an oddball suggestion by yours truly, Opera Japan ended up sponsoring the event giving away Nintendo DSis with our browser for the prizes, and having us preparing and serving salmon (courtesy of the embassy) to everyone. Anyways, was great fun! Thanks to the organizers, and to coworkers and friends for helping out or dropping by! Oh, still time to win a Nintendo DSi by following the steps on this page btw. :P
