iPhone 3G w/2.0 woes
While the iPhone 3G is probably my favorite phone so far, it has its fair share of issues - including some really serious ones. After ranting here and there I got asked to put up a list, so here goes. This is for the iPhone 3G running the 2.0 firmware. Hopefully the list will be a bit shorter as soon as we get the 2.1 update. I'll try to update the list as I discover other issues that threaten my sanity. >>

Google Calendar + iCal + iPhone
I use Apple's MobileMe for keeping my Macs and iPhone 3G in sync. I always used .Mac to keep my machines in sync, and the promise of having all my calendars and contacts pushed to my phone was the main reason I caved in for the iPhone - luckily I never suffered from all the problems MobileMe went through after launch. While this is all nice and all, for collaborated calendars I use Google Calendar. Now that Google finally added CalDAV support my Google Calendars can be accessed directly from iCal. So far so good, but MobileMe doesn't support CalDAV (nor subscribed calendars) and neither does the iPhone so getting these calendars pushed onto my phone requires another step; NuevaSync. A (so far) free Exchange service that ties in with Google Calendar (as well as Google Contacts if you use that, and they are apparently working on push GMail). On the phone I now see two calendar groups; MobileMe and Google via NuevaSync and everything syncs in all directions so finally all my schedules are kept in sync over the air. :)

Broadening my neighborhood
As mentioned earlier I've started using a new subway line for my daily commutes. While the main JR station close to where I live is on the neighborhood's main street, the Fukutoshin Line station is in a slightly different direction, on another large street that is crossing the above mentioned main street. My neighborhood life have been centered around the main street and it's smaller side streets between me and the JR station. Now that I'm using another station my playground has expanded as I've started to discover new restaurants and so forth in a previously unknown area. Today I found an Italian place where you can have a four course dinner with a glass of wine for 2,500 yen. I've also finally found the much rumored izakaya that has beer for 150 yen... that's like half of what a beer costs in the super market! Or 1/5th of most other bars. If it doesn't suck (haven't stopped by yet, so bet it does), having that between the station and home is potentially dangerous.

Web on the Beach
Back to the beach again for another CSS Nite event that we sponsored; CSS Nite: Web on the beach 2008. This time it was in Kamakura, just outside Yokohama, which is nearby Tokyo. It was less seminar like than the one at Okinawa as the presentations (W3C, Opera, Microsoft, Adobe, etc.) took place during the beach party while people were having beers and generally chilling. Beach, beer, food, awamori, and fireworks. Can't go wrong with that.

Got the iPhone 3G!
Finally! Got the iPhone 3G today after various failed attempts in Okinawa last weekend and in Tokyo this week. :) A small cellphone shop in my neighborhood managed to secure one black 16GB yesterday and called me up. So far it seems great, albeit it has a few known issues; no clipboard is annoying, doesn't handle Japanese emojis, the screen is somewhat low resolution (but not really annoying as they're good at using it for what it's worth), and its a bit big. Not the phone's fault, but still annoying is that Softbank's reception is horrible compared to au/KDDI. Don't know how the battery holds up yet as I just got it. Hopefully it's not as bad as some says. Push mail and content using MobileMe works great, and that is really the most important as I'm sick and tired of trying to sync my calendar and contacts onto Windows Mobile and various other cellphone platforms from my Macs. Proper sync is for me the killer app. Overall this seems great. Now I just need to spend hours building up the same music selection as on my iPod Touch...

Okinawa wrap up and Churaumi Aquarium
Today was the last day in Okinawa and to cover more ground, or more targeted ground, we split up into two teams. The snorkeling team and the aquarium team. As the mother of all aquariums, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, is in Nago I went there. Thinking back now after hearing the praises from the snorkeling team, maybe the snorkeling was the more adventurous option, but the aquarium was pretty damn good too. The biggest tank was enormous containing no less than 3 whale-sharks and an insane amount of other big things swimming around. All in all a good ending on a great trip.

CSS Nite Okinawa 2008
The CSS Nite Okinawa 2008 event lasted for two days. On Saturday it was mostly like a normal conference with various company booths and presentations by Adobe, Microsoft, and us, among others. This being a developer seminar our presentation (Keiki and Go) this time was mostly focused on our new debugging tool; Dragonfly. The second day was to have fun and to network. Basically Sunday was one long beach party with barbq, lots of beer (the beer here is named "Origin" and is ok), competitions to win various sponsor goods (including a somewhat funny incident with one of ours winning a Firefox backpack), etc.

Arriving in Okinawa
Arrived in Naha yesterday, the capital of Okinawa prefecture, the hundreds of islands in the south of Japan. I'm here with 5 other colleagues for the CSS Nite Okinawa 2008 event that we're sponsoring here that will take place over the weekend. We all got here somehow, even if Tomo got late and had to pretend to be Terje to get on Terje's later flight, Terje had to pretend to me, and I had to be Tomo for us all to get here. But it worked out somehow and I got something to bug Tomo about till the end of time - or till I run late for a flight, whichever comes first. First day in Okinawa was mostly spent sightseeing and partying. The weather is (too) great, the nature is nice, food is awesome, things are cheaper than in Tokyo, and people are more friendly. Overall good shit. :)
